| According the Dept. of Agriculture, new rules stress that organic milk and meat must come from livestock that graze in open pasture at least four months of the year and that 30% of their feed come from grazing. Did you know that old rules, which are still in effect, suggest that animals only need access to pasture in order to be considered organically feed? As consumers continue to make healthier choices regarding their diet, the demand for organically grown food, (food that has not been treated with pesticides or grown without hormones, antibiotics, or biotechnology), pressures ranchers and farmers to conform to a stiffer definition of organic. The pasture rules are the first step in that direction giving one year from this June to comply; rules that have taken several years and billions of dollars to develop and finally make standard. It can’t happen soon enough! You may want to wait a year before you eat “organic” beef or serve “organic” milk to your family…and what about the “organic” food you have already consumed?
